At the end of an episode of Showtime’s House of Lies a few weeks ago I saw a trailer for a show called Penny Dreadful. The name alone peaked my interest and I did a Google search to find what this show was about. I found the trailer on YouTube and some information on the website and needless to say I’m excited!
Apparently the term Penny Dreadful was coined in the 19th century to describe publications that told creepy, disturbing fictional stories at the low price of a cent (a penny). The show will take on classic stories like Frankenstein and Dorian Grey and give it a new spin in (of course) Victorian London. Here’s the synopsis:
Some of literature’s most terrifying characters, including Dr. Frankenstein, Dorian Gray and iconic figures from the novel “Dracula” are lurking in the darkest corners of Victorian London. Penny Dreadful is a frightening psychological thriller that weaves together these classic horror origin stories into a new adult drama.
It stars Josh Hartnett (So happy to see him on TV!) and Eva Green and is set to air Sunday, May 11 at 10 P.M. There’s even an official Penny Dreadful Goodreads book club, so you can read all the books the show is sure to touch on.
